Hi! I am Kim, the heart behind Hidden Gem Lodging.
I first discovered this property in February 2022 while dreaming of a place where I could share my love of nature with others—especially children and outdoor enthusiasts. The peaceful woods, river access, and quiet beauty of the land immediately felt special to me.
Not long after, I met a couple of photographers who opened my eyes to how meaningful this place could be for birders and nature photographers. Their passion inspired me to create a space where people could stay right in the heart of Sax–Zim Bog, surrounded by the wildlife and landscapes they come here to experience.
Today, I live on the property year‑round with my two house cats and a deep appreciation for the land I call home. Hidden Gem Lodging is my way of sharing that feeling with every guest who visits.
ABOUT HIDDEN GEM
Hidden Gem Lodging is located in the heart of Sax–Zim Bog, tucked away on 12.5 acres of wooded land along the Whiteface River. The original home was built in 1935, and since purchasing the property in 2022, I’ve been lovingly remodeling the house and reimagining the land into a peaceful, nature‑connected retreat.
One unique feature of this location is the train that runs along Hwy 7 through the bog, right across the street from the property. It sounds its horn at each intersection for extra warning and offers a charming glimpse of rural life.
My first guest cabin is now complete and ready for visitors. More cabins are planned for the future to give guests even more ways to enjoy Hidden Gem year‑round. Campsites are also in the works—perfect for summer guests who want to paddle, fish, bike, or simply relax near the river and woods.
This land is alive with wildlife. On any given day, you might see deer, raccoons, red squirrels, wild turkeys, or even catch a glimpse of a black bear or owl passing through. The skies, trees, and feeders are filled with the songs of year‑round birds and seasonal migrants, making Hidden Gem a special place for birders and photographers alike.
In addition to lodging, I’ve started a vegetable garden, begun raising chickens, and am restoring natural habitat by planting milkweed and native wildflowers—creating a truly pollinator‑friendly haven for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial species.
There’s always something growing and evolving here. Hidden Gem is more than a place to stay—it’s a chance to reconnect with the land, the seasons, and the quiet beauty of northern Minnesota.
