ABOUT US
Hi! We’re Kim and Jason, the couple behind Hidden Gem Lodging.
In February 2022, Kim discovered this beautiful property while dreaming of a place to share her love of nature with others—especially children and outdoor enthusiasts. Drawn by the peaceful woods, river access, and natural beauty, she knew right away it was something special.
That dream quickly grew. After meeting a couple of photographers, Kim was inspired to create a place where birders and nature photographers could stay right in the heart of Sax-Zim Bog, surrounded by the wildlife and landscapes they came to capture.
Today, we live on the property year-round with our small dog, house cat, and a deep appreciation for this land we call home.
ABOUT HIDDEN GEM
Hidden Gem Lodging is located in the heart of Sax-Zim Bog, tucked away on 12.5 acres of wooded land along the Whiteface River. The original home was built in 1935, and since purchasing the property in 2022, Kim has been lovingly remodeling the house and reimagining the land into a peaceful, nature-connected retreat.
We’re currently finishing our first guest cabin, which will be ready to rent starting December 2025. More cabins are planned for the future to give guests even more ways to enjoy Hidden Gem year-round. Campsites are also in the works—perfect for summer visitors who want to paddle, fish, bike, or simply relax near the river and woods.
This land is alive with wildlife. On any given day, you might see deer, raccoons, red squirrels, wild turkeys, or even catch a glimpse of a black bear or owl passing through. The skies, trees and feeders are filled with the songs of year-round birds and seasonal migrants, making Hidden Gem a special place for birders and photographers alike.
In addition to lodging, Kim and Jason have recently started a vegetable garden, begun raising chickens, and is restoring natural habitat by planting milkweed and native wildflowers—creating a truly pollinator-friendly haven for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial species.
There’s always something growing and evolving here. Hidden Gem is more than a place to stay—it’s a chance to reconnect with the land, the seasons, and the quiet beauty of northern Minnesota.
