Photography enthusiasts and birders will delight in the seasonal opportunities found in the Sax-Zim Bog. Hidden Gem is located just minutes from some of the region’s most popular birding roads.
Throughout the year, this natural wonderland presents a kaleidoscope of beauty. In winter, the bog becomes a haven for birdwatchers and photographers, offering stunning chances to capture owls, rare birds, and wildlife set against snow-covered landscapes.
Great Gray Owl
Great Gray Owls are year-round residents of the Sax-Zim Bog. In winter, more owls may arrive from the north, creating amazing opportunities to view and photograph these majestic birds.
Ermine
This small, agile mammal turns pure white in winter, blending seamlessly with the snow. Often seen hunting stealthily, ermines can be spotted near the Welcome Center and along the boardwalks throughout the bog.
Northern Hawk Owl
This striking owl hunts by day and can often be spotted perched atop tall trees. Though uncommon, it’s occasionally seen in the Sax-Zim Bog, especially in winter.
Evening Grosbeak
These bold, colorful birds are winter visitors to the Sax-Zim Bog, Mary Lou's Feeders and the Hidden Gem property. Look for flocks of them at feeders.
Pine Marten
A year-round resident of the bog, the elusive Pine Marten is a skilled climber and hunter. Though shy, it’s occasionally spotted near feeders or darting through the forest.
Pine Grosbeak
A winter visitor to Sax-Zim Bog, the Pine Grosbeak can be seen throughout the Bog, Mary Lou's Feeders and at the Hidden Gem property. Look for these beauties feeding at the feeders.
Spring and summer bring a vibrant burst of life—migrating birds return, wild orchids bloom, colorful flowers fill the landscape, and butterflies dance through sunlit clearings—providing endless inspiration for anyone who loves nature and the outdoors.
Butterflies
From late spring through summer, a variety of butterflies flutter through the bog, drawn to wildflowers and open meadows. Watch for monarchs, fritillaries (pictured here), and many more along sunny trails.
Orchids
The bog and surrounding areas are home to a variety of native orchids, including Minnesota’s state flower—the Showy Lady’s Slipper. These stunning blooms can be found in spring and summer throughout the bog, along trails and ditches
Warblers
In spring and summer, colorful warblers fill the bog, Hidden Gem and surrounding properties with song. Dozens of species can be seen flitting through trees and shrubs across the area
